Really? I'm surprised it has more than one!

@3101home It's also larger than Connecticut by about 500 square miles. If you think that's crazy, the XIT Ranch (1885-1912) alone was 3,000,000 acres, or 4,687 square miles, and spread across parts of ten Texas counties along the New Mexico state line.

@3101home Interesting! I didn't know they had holdings that far northeast.

UT's main campus is not even the largest in the state -- it's only 431 acres in Austin. Texas Tech in Lubbock is 1,839 acres. Texas A&M's main campus is 5,115 acres in College Station (it stretches from Texas Ave all the way to the Brazos River and contains agricultural operations, an airport, a firefighter training facility, and a small nuclear reactor -- for studies, not power production. That doesn't include other campuses within their systems nor the land and mineral rights owned by the Permanent University Fund elsewhere around the state. That little college in GA has a campus of 27,000 acres -- the same size as Disney World before they broke off a few thousand acres to build the town of Celebration.

If you think the 825,000 acre King Ranch is big, you should explore the history of the XIT Ranch in the Panhandle. It was HUUUUUGE, clocking in at more than 3,000,000 acres, running along the TX/NM border for roughly 200 miles, 20 to 30 miles wide, and stretching across ten Texas counties (out where the counties are considered ridiculously immense even by Texas standards). In 1885, it was granted as the "paycheck" to the people who built the state Capitol. XIT sold its last head of cattle in 1912.
