I have a hypothesis as to why Southern Californians refer to freeways as "The 5" and so on. The L.A. area freeways were built decades before the Interstate Highway System existed (in fact, The Pasadena Freeway was the first freeway built in the United States) and all their freeways were named, not numbered. So, after numbering was introduced, "The Pasadena Freeway" and "The San Diego Freeway" became "The 110" and "The 405."

Check out the lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas. Lots of towns like Pharr are stuffed with retirees. Many of them live in RV parks seasonally (October through March) and return north to avoid the 3-digit summer temperatures.

@RobinP556 It's pronounced the same way in Monopoly because it's named after the actual railroad that connected coal mines to Reading and on to Philadelphia. The railroad ceased to exist in 1979 when its assets were transferred to Conrail.

@edwardrhoads7283 That's the name of their company. The show is "Good Bones."

@belfast7402 And old-timers in Texas still refer to I-35 as IH-35. Regional peculiarities are fun!
