Is it because of the energy mafia?" -- There ARE a number of geothermal plants in the western U.S. Most of them were built by the so-called "energy mafia," whatever that means (it sounds conspiracy nutty). They are extremely expensive to build and maintain. The fuel cost is zero but hot brine is hard on the pipes and equipment. Other implemented uses of geothermal in the U.S. include melting snow from roads and sidewalks and heating greenhouses. There are a number of places where it's cost-efficient but It is NOT an "unlimited" resource.
