I'll take "Nations that no longer exist" for $400, Alex. Come on, Daily Double! Daddy needs a new pair of hypershoes.

Ewwwwwwwwwwww!

Some questions: 1) Does it make ANY sense to annoy half of your potential tunneling clients by saying crap like "will destroy subways?" 2) Is the man not aware that the Acela ALREADY EXISTS between Boston and DC and achieves speeds of up to 150mph? 3) Are people not aware that the CTA Blue Line ALREADY provides a 30-minute trip between the Loop and O'Hare and that improvement projects currently underway will shave 10 minutes from that trip?

It's fine. The privately-funded monorail system up above IS completely ADA compliant. Bonus: it actually works!

It seems that we're NOT blowing money on those two things, thankfully!

Here's a radical thought. Vegas already has a monorail starter line that WORKS (and has worked since 2004). Extend it south to the airport and north to downtown. If it serves more places, more people will use it. Weird, right?

@johnknightiii1351 I know that. They also fought the airport connection from the start. My main point was that reinventing the wheel was wasteful when there's already a wheel present. For example, there are rails present in the area and a functional if imperfect monorail. A light rail or trolley line could be overlaid on the existing rail ROW, from North LV to the airport/Henderson and the monorail could curve to meet it at both ends of its route, forming a loose loop circulator while maximizing existing assets. It's worth a look.

@johnknightiii1351 Thank you. The loop I suggested would be a "virtual" one composed of two different transit modes, either of which could independently be extended or branched as needed to serve or guide long-term regional growth. Monorail beams can be smoothed. The tunnels appear too small for either rail or monorail trains but existing low-profile airport peoplemovers or even parking lot style trams might work (if they could be safely automated -- perhaps using a surface guide wire and proximity sensors). Alternatively, they'd make comfortable pedestrian passages. I hate to waste anything that already exists!

I-66 outside the Beltway in the DC area had that, too. During rush hour, it was nice to have yet another lane of traffic moving at a leisurely walking pace.

@ignispurgatorius5297 Profitable or not, Maglev is PROVEN technology. It works.

@Vincent_Beers That's not exactly how railroads work in the USA. Freight is quite profitable on its own. Historically, the profits from freight transportation subsidized passenger service, not the other way around. That's part of the reason passenger service was eliminated by the Class I railroads, leading to the creation of Amtrak.

@ignispurgatorius5297 By "hanging railway" do you mean suspended monorail? There are several of those in Japan, as well. Personally, I think supported monorail is safer, easier to maintain, and creates fewer psychological issues for the passengers. I wouldn't advocate for suspended monorails. I would for supported maglev, however. Passenger-only, as there is little need for 600kph freight service, just as there's little need to stuff a maglev into a windowless sewer pipe with no air.
