  1. the ship fell bellow the calcium carbonate compensation depth which is why there are no skeletal remains; fish would have eatten the flesh and then the bones disolved, same reason the ship itself is disolving. The reason they are bringing up intact leather bags and shoes is because calcium carbonate is used in the tanning process so it can tolerate those chemicals, other materials would have disolved by now (like clothing)

  2.  @RowdyJr  it's because leather is "immune" from calcium carbonate disintegration since those chemicals are used in the tanning process. I know that the reason some papers, like identification, didn't disintegrate is because they were made of vellum which is made from animal skin that is also made using calcium carbonate
