  1. Living near Biggs AFB in ol El Paso, then Offutt near omaha in 1960s, 1970s , I always herd 3,000 mph (M3.9) kicked around as often achieved. Doesn't matter now , but nothing was close to it then , just as nothing has been since. Some could possibly be resurrected to max performance if needed today, as the airframe supposedly got 'better' from heat cycling its mostly titanium construction

  2. Design began late 50s, early 60s by engineers using Slide Rules . Most of Titanium metallurgy was developed to make the plane. Annealing took place on most flights , making it stronger as it aged. There were never any similar planes developed due to technical and financial barriers !
