"It's not the same thing: coffee without cream or coffee without milk. What you don't get is part of the identity of what you get." - Slavoj Žižek

@kingofhearts3185 Capitalism with carbon credits doesn't negate the harmful effects of consumption. Capitalism is inherently driven to shift costs onto the environment, ordering a "capitalism without carbon" doesn't mean it wont happily cause chemical runoff, Foxconn labor standards, or rail accidents like East Palestine just to increase shareholder profits.

@kingofhearts3185 What do you mean, what does that have to do with branding the same thing two different ways? Coffee without cream and coffee without milk is both black coffee but rebranded in terms of its negation, which is exactly what capitalism with carbon offsets is. Check out Zizek for a deeper understanding.

@EhM-xt7pl In the long run.... So costs of climate change are being shifted onto other generations. Corporate stock prices are driven by short term profits (because that's how time-risk is adjusted when valuing assets, as longer time horizons have less certainty), and lots of CEOs pay is incentivized based on short term performance. Capitalism loves negative externalities because they shift costs and increase the bottom line.... CEOs are literally incentivized to increase the bottom line. Capitalism is a system that incentivizes being short sighted and selfish. If you want a system that's not based on being selfish, cooperativism focuses on including the broader community and environment into its economic considerations.
