Employment is literally renting another human being as if they're property. The employer-employee relationship is a very insidious dynamic. Employment is a rental contract, like if you rented capital (say, a chainsaw from Home Depot), you pay rent for the "time preference" (basically the cost of time) for a piece of property. Capitalism is based on a principle of self ownership, which sounds empowering, until you realize that most people don't own capital goods other than themselves, and must rent out the authority over themselves as pieces of "human capital". This is a process of dehumanization where human beings are valued for their return on investment as capital goods. This is why, at the very least, capitalism needs unions and safety nets (or abolishment), or else the system won't value people for their human value. Importantly we must also think about our sick, elderly, and disabled people, as they can't provide competitive economic return for the investor class to value. We must figure out a way to change this economic system if we wish to value each other as human beings.

Automation and AI isn't necessarily a bad thing. The problem is is that it's controlled by, and for, the rich to get richer. If these means of production were owned by workers they would be controlled by and for the purposes of the workers instead of an absentee ruling class that increase their dividend and capital growth faster than wages will ever keep up.

@georgegeorge4560 The Cleveland Model/ Preston Model, which is a system of anchoring democratically managed worker cooperatives into communities by securing stable contracts with local institutions, like hospitals, universities, and municipalities. This helps jobs and wealth stay in the community rather than work being outsourced and profits being shipped to Wall St. It's a great benefit to the people that have been involved in such a type of community wealth building... Because that's the thing, the main goal is about building wealth not government redistribution.

@kcnl2522 What does "contribute to society" mean? Just because a person with Downs syndrome might not be able to work a job that fully pays for their living, they still provide value to the people around them. This is the discrepancy between economic value and human value. Just because grandma is in a wheelchair and doesn't have enough money for retirement doesn't mean you just toss her on the street, SHE HAS HUMAN VALUE. You're basically saying you don't understand the value of family or friends.

@j.joseph5353 Nobody gets paid for just being human? Um, have you heard of disability insurance (private and public). I will be getting 900bucks from my state just for filing my 1099-INT (yes, that's the investment forum) because my state has a constitutional commitment to maintain a spending per capita limit so all access revenues are returned to taxpayers. Alaska takes their oil revenues and distributes it among all of their adult citizens just for being human citizens. It's really sad that you can't see the value in taking care of the sick and disabled. I assume you're the type of person to start a business and start selling to all of your friends because why have any friends if you can't make money off of them, right? Your prejudical jabs are cute but I constantly get compliments from CPAs and CFAs about how well I understand personal finance and the market... Good thing that's what really matters and not whatever you think.
