@flagmichael It is simple as the electrodes stress. In full charge, the electrodes are expanding and develop cracked and SEI (sludge near the electrodes). Eventually either the SEI or the electrode failed and dropped capacity.

Thanks for explaining it to us. It is indeed complicated just like Benz, Audi, or BMW but we know it last long and not as expensive as luxury cars. The amazing thing about it, It is a STANDARD for all Toyota, compared to other brands that discriminate against the poor people by stripping this feature on the lower trim or cheaper cars.
2
The facts UK and Ireland have 15 years battery warranty shows how temperature effects the lifespan of battery. In Florida and Texas, typically only about 10 years before the battery died, but much longer in Germany, NY, Washington state, Midwest, and Canada. Many last 15 years or longer. Heat is the main killer not the cold
2
Funny enough Benz and BMW genuine oil is as cheap as Toyota and way cheaper than VW/Audi.
2
@useryggfdcc Yes, but if it is driven with very short trip/less than 5 miles in winter, never go to highway, then 5k miles is a good way. 100 miles city is worse than 1000 miles highway.

Correction for Honda. The engine power generator and generator power the MG2 instead charging the battery first.

@TheCarCareNut Thanks a lot, very nice tips and clear. I got AISIN brake pads for my Corolla Hybrid 2015 wagon and it was made in Italy. It is said made for Corolla wagon and RAV4. I thought it will be the same as Advics (Aisin subsidiary) original Toyota pads but I was wrong. They are almost identic but not the same, it is probably semi-metalic too and R90 certified. Do you think all Aisin parts are actually OEM of Toyota? I know that all Toyota transmission are made by Aisin. The price of Toyota OEM pads 04465-42180 is €191 in Europe and $104 in USA, compared to Aisin €30. Besides that, the original Advics brake disc is not painted/coated. I bought Zimmermann Brake Disc for 1/2 price (€35) instead of €80 for Advics disc. Is there any reasons why Toyota parts is so expensive in Europe compared to USA? I think this is the main reasons Toyota is not as popular yet in Europe.
2
@TheCarCareNut Thanks, I noticed the Toyota parts are identical with Aisin waterpump and Advics pads, Denso evaporator, compressor, etc. but only when I was in USA. I found AISIN sell coolant with blue colors called Ultra Longlife coolant, and ATF6+ that specified for WS, DexronVI, Mercon V, Honda, some ZF transmission etc. It makes me think that actually Dexron VI and other ATF are indeed compatible
2
Good simpler version of Prof. Kelly explanations. Thanks AMD.
2
220k miles, 24 years old timing belt and yet it still holds. NO wonder why now VW claimed their Timing Belt in newer Golf and Passat are claimed to be a lifetime. Probably because VW lifespan is not longer than 200k miles anyway.
2
2015 Prius 1.8L the last year of 3rd gen get new cylinder ring and oiseton design
2
Newer Toyotas sometimes use Bosch brake with 13mm hex, instead of 14mm like what Toyota always used. 8,10,12,14,17,22,24 mm. But German parts use 13 or 15mm hex, really annoying.
2
@TheCarCareNut When I was in Europe, it was Toyota Auris Hybrid 1.8L 2015 or Corolla IM with Bosch rear brake system, the bolts that are treaded to sliding pins. The front one is Advics. The good parts, it does not have jammed brake bolt sliding pins like in most Prius 3rd Gen. Yes, in Europe, Toyota uses parts from German suppliers like Bosch and ZF group such as Sachs shocks and Stabilus lifter.
2
Do you know why German cars do not rust as bad as Toyota? .................................................. Because it is always cover by oil leaks everywhere.
2
@zoukchata the cells in 2 and 3rd gen prius are interchangeable. Even 1st gen prius can use 3rd gen cells. 4th gen may not fit but i don't know. Most 2nd gen can go over 400k miles in its original battery in mild weather. Don't change if you doubt, just sell it. You can use Dr. PRIUS apps with carista obd2 scanner or any ELM327 compatible with full features.
2
The owner of the Chicago Auto also has LEXUS ES with relatively high mileage. After he gave up his GTI.
2
@kordapyo612 LOL, I believe it was 2008, Shell also sell a lot of Nitrogen terms for the detergent which is more less PEA. Drilled disc is indeed purely cosmetics. Serious brake suppliers do not sell drilled disc, they use coma or hooks slotted patterns. It reduce the weak point of drilled rotors but keep the pads clean at minimum defect on the rotors
2
Thanks for the video. I hope NA will also get the 5th gen Hybrid with 200HP 2.0L hybrid like Europe get this fall.
2
there are 2 kinds of 0w20 oil. Just regular 0w20 and longlife IV oil that is designed for 20k miles. Castrol edge and Mobil 1 have it with higher additives and better base stock. Get that one for $3 more and no problem
2
@piperpilot26 yes, definitely. I always do 1y 15k miles interval on my Toyota but always use full synthetic with longlife certification ACEA C5 or A1/B1. None of them need any top off. Sienna 04, Camry 05, prius 06, Corolla hybrid. My nissan altima 02 burns oil 1L per 1000 miles, head gasket leak at 63k miles, shot catalytic converter, etc. I'm surprised there is still Fiat 500 on the USA road these days.
2
@smh9902 Thanks for your input too. I know these debates but I still believe that standardization such as ILSAC6 certification is enough. Most engines wear is caused by extended oil change intervals combined with short and cold trips. Toyota engines almost never have issues in bearings, timing chains, and sprockets from lack of film strenght. 99% of Toyota engine problems are caused by stuck piston rings and oil return holes. there are some problems with the VVTI sprocket from lack of lubrication in cold start too. With these issues, 0w-xx oil is actually better. Chemically, it is easier to make stable 0w-16 and 0w-20 than 5w-40 oil. Of course, TBN and additives contents are also important to balance wear/stability with how much it can poison catalytic converter.
2
@bearpaw7603 LOL, Yes, the 4th gen Prius is indeed hedious. Comparing E class Benz with GS hybrid or IS Hybrid and we wil see what the meaning of luxury, comfortable, and fuel efficiency. The E class is not bad, but will never last 1/2 life of any Lexus. It depends what the car is for. If it is to own, Lexus is good. For Leasing, Benz is not bad
2
@whereisthedollar Prius prime is a further step before EV. It looks more acceptable than regular prius. But I believe RAV4 prime is much better and faster. Especially with government incentives on PHEV, RAV4 prime is very good deal
2
@jakedank2746 LOL, it is now held by Tesla owners
2
@Flying_GC use statistical number with millions samples. The world already change and Benz is becoming chicken from dinosaur. Barely any Benz survive aftrr 20 years/200 k miles. But you can see them in junkyards. More in junkyards not because of accident than on the road. Statistically in the world, more than 80% 20 y old toyota are still on the road.
2
VETERAN minimum 15 years, unless you live in Arizona and park outside without shaded area. In UK/Ireland with mild climate, toyota gives 15 years unlimited miles warranty. Just make sure do not buy pre 2013 Prius, head gasket issues that resolved by revised gasket in 2013 production and up
2
Motul has 0W-8 in many places including EU
1
Yes, additives is not necessary for most car except it was neglected and use bad fuel brand for a long time. But it is indeed true some needs it but 99.9% do nothing
1
Americans get the best all seasons that hat patterns like summer tires with decent snow capability. It last 60-90k miles.. They get M+S symbol but not 3 peak snow mountains that winter tires gets. For people who live in north mid west, all seasons like Michelin crossclimate may be better for snowy time with 3 peak snow mountains.
1
@TheCarCareNut Does it have to be 4th gen or just the last 3rd gen is much better? In Europe Corolla IM hybrid, 2013-2018 is sold 8x more than Prius. However, we do not have widespread head gasket problems. Is it possible because the minimum in EU is Super95 5% Ethanol or 90midgrade in USA grade octane fuel? I remember that my Prius 2nd gen has light pinging ing light load with regular E10 when I lived in FL. It does not do that before 2008 when we still use pure Gasoline, not E10 in USA. I feel like cars made before 2008 are tuned for non-ethanol fuel and E10 causes slight lean and light pinging under Light Load/close loop. My Camry 2002, Altima 2002, Sienna 2004 all had pinging issues under light load.
1
Normal usage 60k miles interval is ideal. Towing and heavy loads, 30k miles is probably the maximum for your fluid change. I will go with 20k miles interval or 30k miles with additional transmission fluid cooler.
1
@AgonxOC exactly, but with the small engine, turbo everything. It is not the case. Jump timing chain from worn plastic guides almost in all brands:BMW, DAIMLER, VAG. The pre 2008 VAG was much more durable.
1
@cathylacava2630 Go find WC, toilet is free in USA
1
How about 2ZR-FXE engine get also have this leak?
1
This is a SUV I will take instead of RAV4. 2 years old NX is better value than a new RAV4. The doors are deal breaker that can KILL PEOPLE in emergency situation and panic. For instance when 12 V battery died and the car stop on railroad.
1
Michelin, Goodyear, Continental, and Bridgestone are actually really good tires. It really depends on how and where the cars were driven. I had 10 years old continental tires and have virtually no crack but the cheap Primewell tires starts to have crack after 3 years because it is parked outside, not in the garage.
1
@loden888 what Michelin has a cracking issue? I need to note it as Michelin is the most expensive. I like Goodyear because of its cheaper price but performs well. Especially their summer tires.
1
Most of the brake fluid in cars needs to flush every 4-5 years but in Hybrid, the condition of the brake fluid in 8 years are often better than other cars. It gets slightly darker but the water content is still less than 1%, 4% is the time to change
1
It is almost always the evaporator if we cannot find anything on the engine bay etc. Very common problems in Prius 2 too. Typically this job is more than 10 hours
1
We actually can bypass this and let it round without the exaust heat recovery. It is still in good emission but slower heating process of the engines. The effect is still minimal unlike no catalytic converter.
1
Do you mean ZF Germany? It was Lamfoeder and now owned by ZF, Aisin main competitor
1
@fleetingdays You will be surprised it outlast your new car.
1
I believe we can have 2 sets of wheel with tpms. Do caring have those
1
@TheCarCareNut it is a kleck/tud deep sound very mild not loud on uneven roads. But no sound on a speed bump when both sides are up and down. I can hear it better at low speed on wavy paving blocks road. I try to wiggle them, they are all tight, just a sound issue.
1
@TheCarCareNut Thanks AMD, I believe that is the best investment for time and money for this issue. I still pass TÜV inspection in Germany. Everything is tight. Auris 2013-2018 hybrid have very similar suspension as CT200h and identical to Corolla IM
1
e-CVT is like 3 speed Shimano internal gear
1
@TheCarCareNut Yes, funny enough this 15 years warranty is not broadcast heavily. People who never know Toyota Hybrid are so sceptical and never know this. They thought Toyota only have 3 years 60k miles warranty in EU. Only in UK/Ireland with 5 y. In mainlamd Europe, they have 10y warranty with unlimited mileage not 15. Probably some parts are too hot like spain and greece that will kill battery sooner. Just like Florida or Arizona where most Prius battery last about 11 years.
1
@Blakecryderman7244 i like 0w-30 because they are just naturally made from better base oil. More PAO contents. The 5w-30 is very broad but 0w-30 is only possible with high quality base stock. The additives are also strong especially if they are certified for 20k miles interval from VW, Benz, BMW, or Dexos.
1
I have 2zr-fxe Corolla hybrid and hear rattle in split of second and dealership said it is normal. What do you think AMD? It never rattle for more than 1 second.
1
@TheCarCareNut thanks for the excellent informative video. Iam wondering what is the origin of the rattle because it is random. It is definitely from engine not the hybrid components and also only during cold starts especially in winter.
