@TheCarCareNut NiMh battery in 2nd and 3rd gen last really long. 500k Miles /10 years are easy as long as the weather is not really hot like Florida or Arizona. In West Europe, many are more than 15 years without issues because of mild weather. UK/Ireland have warranty for 15 years, unlimited miles.

@flagmichael It is simple as the electrodes stress. In full charge, the electrodes are expanding and develop cracked and SEI (sludge near the electrodes). Eventually either the SEI or the electrode failed and dropped capacity.

NiMh battery with Lanthanum, cheap reliable rare-earth chatode LaNi6 is proven reliable, and safe. The Li is also good but not that long time tested yet. Tesla give a good example and looks fine too now. HOwever, Tesla use active heat pump cooling. Leaf and Zoe has no heat pump and the battery lifespan is very short. No longer than 8 years 100 k miles before drop to 70%
