@GoaWay... For newer cars after 2010, use what is in the owner manual. For older cars that usually takes 5w-30, you can use 0w-30 German/Belgium Castrol Edge longlife oil for the best protection. But any Full synthetic 5w-30 are the best option. My Sienna 2004 for more than 200k miles, consume less than 1 oz per year or 12k miles. Yes, I do oil change once a year with Longlife 0w30 oil. If it is certified VW507, 508, BMWLL01, etc. They are really good oil that are used in europe for 20k miles/1y OCI. Oil change for Toyota in Europe cost about $200. So, people do it really once a year/10k miles and we are all fine. The problem in USA is so many Oilchange shop giving you coupon with non-qualified oil for 1 y/10k miles interval. It has to be full synthetic with 0w-20 or 0w-16 for the newer Toyota/HOnda.

Yes, it's true 10k miles one year mild normal drive, not short trips less than 5 miles. But the most important part is full synthetic 1 y interval, no more than 1 year.

@upnorthviking823 LOL, that's only for really clucky 1970s Chevy trucks, not modern Toyota Tundra or Tacoma with tight tolerance engines. The worst period for the engine is start and warmup, that's why newer oil is 0W-XX. Unless you drive sophisticated Tracking cars like GTR or M5.

@GoaWay... That snake oil will hurt your money and your car. Do not put anything like that. Just put high quality longlife 0w-20 Oil, or it is called extended interval in USA for 20k miles/1year. I know Pennzoil, Mobil1, and Castrol sell 0w20 extended intervals oil. It has more additives than regular 10k miles 0w20 and a clean engine better. I remember fixing my buddy 2003 Corolla from sticking VVT by putting 0w30 German Castrol Edge. After about 500 miles and He drove it in the highway for 4-hour trips, all the Check Engine light from VVT problems disappear. That high-quality oil cleans the engine well.

@piperpilot26 It is true but not everyone needs to drive long enough daily. That's why only high-quality engines from Toyota, Mazda, and Honda are popular in the USA because their engines and transmission can take the abuse better than other brands.

Most oil change shop use non qualified oil for more than 5000 miles. Some oil has 18-24k miles interval/2 years but again under normal driving condition, and usually sold only in Europe and for Cars with 7 or 8 quarts oil sump. Most Toyota have 5 quarts max.

@upnorthviking823 No, no at all. most toyota and honda runs better with 0w20. 0w8 is actually the future, but the are made from high quality base

there are 2 kinds of 0w20 oil. Just regular 0w20 and longlife IV oil that is designed for 20k miles. Castrol edge and Mobil 1 have it with higher additives and better base stock. Get that one for $3 more and no problem

@piperpilot26 yes, definitely. I always do 1y 15k miles interval on my Toyota but always use full synthetic with longlife certification ACEA C5 or A1/B1. None of them need any top off. Sienna 04, Camry 05, prius 06, Corolla hybrid. My nissan altima 02 burns oil 1L per 1000 miles, head gasket leak at 63k miles, shot catalytic converter, etc. I'm surprised there is still Fiat 500 on the USA road these days.

@smh9902 Thanks for your input too. I know these debates but I still believe that standardization such as ILSAC6 certification is enough. Most engines wear is caused by extended oil change intervals combined with short and cold trips. Toyota engines almost never have issues in bearings, timing chains, and sprockets from lack of film strenght. 99% of Toyota engine problems are caused by stuck piston rings and oil return holes. there are some problems with the VVTI sprocket from lack of lubrication in cold start too. With these issues, 0w-xx oil is actually better. Chemically, it is easier to make stable 0w-16 and 0w-20 than 5w-40 oil. Of course, TBN and additives contents are also important to balance wear/stability with how much it can poison catalytic converter.

Not really, Oil change cost $200 in Europe with 0w-20. So, it is not cheap for modern car. Older cars with 5w30 only cost about $25 with coupon in Tireplus or any oilshop with coupon online.
1
@smh9902 no, it is not. We hVe 0w-8 and it will be global at some point. There is no significant engine wear or oil consumption of using 0w-20. Most VW wifh 5w-30 still consume way more oil than japanese cars. It is about additives packs and engine quality. Funny enough, newer 1.0 TSI with 0w-20 508/509 shows lower wear and lower oil consumption.
1
@smh9902 Look there are some Toyota with more than a million Miles and still drive fine with almost no oil consumption. 5w-30 is for the past primitive poor people who cannot afford full synthetic oil in 3rd world country or manufacturer who has no quality in making engines
1
@smh9902 man, 99% Toyota owner never has issues with 0w-20, 0w-16. But many has more issues by not using them in their Toyota because of cheap 5w-30 from $20 quick lube deal with coupon and other deals. You can do whatever you thing the best for you but we, 99.999999% will follow what manufacturer recommended. 500k miles is not hard for Toyota with regular 0w-20 or 0w-16 oil change. We already have the number in many forums and TV. The 0w-8 is too new and not enough statistics yet.
1
@smh9902 dude, you are in wrong place. Diesel is a dirty word for cars. It is left to truck and locomotives. You can use 30w-100 and no one cares.
1
@smh9902 you can have your opinion and thought. I don't buy it. I am happy with my 0w-16 and do not miss any thicker oil. The formulation and standardisation of ILSAC6 is only better in all factors including wear, not just flow and effeciency. 5w-30 and 10w-40 will be gone for car application, although still relevant for heavy duty diesel 16 wheelers and train. Even some diesel cars use 0w-20 these days and they are great like DexosD standard.
1
@smh9902 Statistically, the system with a regular filter and group III oil works well. The engines last longer than other parts of the cars. Nothing to worry about.
1
@nofyfb123 absolutely. Especially with cheap oil price combined with rebates and coupon. We often gets free oil.
