Dear Veritasium, as a physicist, I've observed that many lab instruments being used (I live in Brazil) are made of lead (like weights). When I questioned about the safety of handling scientific instruments made of lead, my teachers said that "as long as it doesn't get into your mouth, it's fine". Do you know if using lead weights for measuring mass is safe? Do I have the right to refuse to participate in activities that require the use of instruments made with lead?

I've also observed that, like almost all scientific advencements, this knowledge about the exact dangers of lead isn't fully incorporated into the legislation habits of people in developing countries until a few decades after developed countries (although I noticed that Brazil was one of the first to ban the use of leaded gasoline for cars). Could the behaviour of my teachers be a result of that? How come the people who were supposed to know about scientific advencements better that everyone else still neglect such an important issue? I guess this one is a bit out of reach of physics, though.
