HD Pirat - Actually I do think that there should be 2 yr mandatory service for everyone right out of h.s. b-4 college or trade school - not necessarily military but a choice: Peace corp, Americore, state parks, animal welfare, community gardens, Green Peace - whatever services inspire & aid the needs of this huge community called US.

  6. boggisthecat - that is not true! I graduated college in 1967 & I still teach p/t for the handicapped. My generation did more for equality than any other. SHUT UP wi blame & start doing something positive to effect change.

  9. Amy, me too! Got BS from PA state Uni in 1967, tuition was $400 a year. It was during Veit Nam draft so the standards were higher: 1100 on college boards, top 10% of class+ college admissions tests, etc YET 1/2 my freshman class flunked out. However, there were many manuf jobs for H.S. grads/ Vo-Tech & good apprenticeships & trade schools which I'm glad Bernie is pushing. We all have different talents! so college grads should not be lauded as smarter just more academically inclined - I have masters but don't ask me to fix your sink lol

  11. I was from lower middle class, wi widowed mother yet I graduated from a PA State Uni in 1967. My tuition was $400 per year.! I was able to pay my tuition by waitressing p/t & summers 75% of grad school/tchr certif was paid by my school district. Not free but almost FREE. SO WHY CAN'T AMERICA DO THIS AGAIN? Remember Bernie never said pay for housing, etc, he said tuition only. So commute, I did. Another point for better public transportation today. As an aside, I don't recommend 4yr degree for everyone but all kids should get a 2yr Assoc or diploma from a trade school, community college. We need skilled workers: plumbers, elctricians, computer repair, beauticians, cooks plus EMT's CNAs & other medical techs.

  15. skooby love - YOU go into a Philly or Baltimore urban poverty school & still tell me that ed is equitable - it isn't! I taught in a few - disgrace at how deprived these kids are at home & at school.
