  33. Chad Simmons It is the opposite from what you think. There will always be rich & poor people but not the disparity as it is now. Middle class was the largest group, backbone of the nation. Study FDR or watch docs on him. It will shed light on what appears to be "new & radical" Bernie Sanders has simply augmented his programs with more socialism. NO! this country got totally screwed up with Reagan & each succeeding president was even greedier & more corrupt. I suggest Noam Chomsky's program on crimes of presidents, nobody is pure. Thom does some excellent rants on Reagan. I'm 74. I was in college in 60s. Life was good for most white Americans but even blacks had well-paying jobs in factories tho lacked opportunity to move into management. (Segregation legal until Civil Rights Act 1964) Everybody had a job so almost everybody had 80 - 100% employer paid Blue Cross & Blue Shield. We still had FDR regulated capitalism, high taxes on rich & corps & social security enhanced by Lyndon Johnson's medicare. Thanks to JFK we were #1 world ranking in education (now #37) & physically fit. Had to pass presidential standards, good thing. State colleges & Universities were almost free, 1967 tuition was $400 per year at PA state uni, Huge opp for lower middle class kids. To be frank, college standards were higher. Veit Nam deferred draft for teacher so state schools were packed, of course half my freshman class flunked out. Be happy there is no more Bell Curve! My dad was white collar no college. He supported my mother & 4 kids, bought a modest 3bdrm single house in Philly burbs. HOWEVER, NO FRILLS Life Style - We had 1 family phone & 1 car, ate at home. We used public transportation, earned spending money. Recreation was centered around extendeded family, neighborhood; churches, schools. We lived outside Philly so museums, culture, history were plentiful.& cheap.
