They were jailed alongside navalny as putin cracked down hard on what he called nazis. Though putin had used those same groups himself in putting down pro democracy demonstrations in 2004/5 when the orange revolution in ukraine was threatening to carry over into moscow and russia. Nemtsov himself, before he too was also murdered, said that navalny was still the best hope for change in russia despite his political change from full on pro democracy.
