  1. Its been internationally recognised ukranian land for 30 years now. Russia itself recognised ukraine as a independant sovereign state after its 92% referendum in 1991. 55% of the 17% ethnic russians living in ukraine at the time voted in favour too.

  2. Maybe 100 years of russification of ukranian culture including its language might have had something to do with it. From stalin through to khrushchev and then brezhnev.
