And you don't have all the best docs in the world. THe U.S> does not hold a monopoly on great docs. If he was in any major Canadian Center he also would have received excellent care. My mom had the same disease and our system saved her life without her having to worry about a massive bill. And I'm not just the source, I could source countless relatives and friends and again poll after poll after poll showing Canadians STRONG support of our system.

WHo cares what Lesner said, its one person who NEVER actually received care in canada and he was at a SMALL community hospital. Just like if he was at a small one in the U.S., they wouldn't have been able to help him either.

It would not have been free for Lesner. NOt to mention, he ran into his problems in the middle of the backwoods of Manitoba and was at a very small community hospital. He was ignorant of excellent care we have because he's never had treatment here.

I think its great, like 90% of Canadians, because no matter what your financial situation EVERYONE is guaranteed healthcare. And the SAME care you would receive in the States. You have been fooled by a couple of anecdotal 'stories' instead of looking at real healthcare outcomes. @Freshbott2 We don't wait long for urgent care in Canada. Wait lists are for elective procedures, and are not as bad as protrayed by U.S. reporters. There is some privatisation in Canada, but not to the same two tiered system as Australia.

You can wait 5 hours in any emerg in the world, like I did in Dallas. If you walk into any Canadian hospital complaining of chest pains, like I did, you get in right away. Maybe your uncle didn't explain his pains or he was just referred to go there. I asked where he lives because in small town rural hospitals, service will be slower. Again, your story is ancedotal. Evidence on our health outcomes proove otherwise on how well it works.

An operation Williams could have gotten in Toronto or MOntreal or Ottawa, as heart specialist have all said there is virtually no heart procedure that is NOT done in Canada. Although it hasn't come out why he has gone to the u.s., the rumor is that he is in Florida. A 12 week recovery time in Toronto in the middle of winter or warm Florida. Hmmmm. You do realize that Americans come to Canada for less expensive care?! Not mention other countries.

Look up causes of death. Traffic addidents make up a whopping 1.7% of all deaths in the U.S. In addition, all countries include accidents in their causes of death calculation. Not to mention that when comparing accidents against other countries, many have more accidents has a proportion of deaths then the U.S. does. Most of them are based in the Kandahar province in the southern part of the country, home to some of the worst violence and instability. @yukoncornileus4 First off, if you are going by the WHO ranking, it wasn't 35th. Not to mention that was bogus report and outdated. Germany does have some waiting lists for elective procedures. But have you checked their doctor to patient ratio? Not to mention, they spend close to us per capita on healthcare, but their ratio of spending publicly is much higher. Ours is 70% public and 30% private, while their's is closer to 90%. Private for profit care is increasing our costs.

As someone who works in Pharma, going in and out of hospitals across SW Ontario and western Canada, you do realize that doctors need office space...right? I guess not. Admin offices in Canada, in comparison to U.S. hospitals, pale in number. Not to mention our admin costs are FAR less than the U.S. And the gov't doesn't run hospitals.

Our gdp spending on healthcare is around 10 to 11%, and has been the last 2 decades. We also have a debt to GDP ratio that is the lowest in the G8. Not to mention, patients for hip operations being shuttled to private for profit clinics were charging the gov't more than what the private for non profit hospitals were. In other words, charging more the same operation, with no better results. Sorry, you can keep that. Gov't only funds universities partially.

For assault, the U.S. does NOT include the most common assault in the their stats, which is regular bodily assault, while Canada does. That's like saying you have lower gun deaths but not count those killed by guns.

Creating a true 2nd tier system would not all of sudden create doctors out of nowhere. And the public system did send patients to private clinics, in your province in particular. Well, they did until THEY WENT OUT OF BUSINESS costing the Alberta tax payers a shit load.

Checked me over then went to lab in the same shopping mall and had my EKG. No wait. You don't wait for ekg's. PERIOD. I don't wait to see my doc. EVER!!! Well I live in Canada, so I actually HAVE experienced first hand. Having family here saying it stinks is NOT first hand experience. Our system saved my mom's life without her having to worry about any bill. It saved my neighbours lives, who both had breast and prostate cancer recently. A recent poll showed that 70% of Canadians are very satisfied or satisfied with their care, while over 80% prefer our system over the U.S.'s system. Sure, some might not like it, but the VAST majority do.

How about when its something really expensive like bypass surgery with a 2 week hosptial stay?? Laser surgery takes all of 30 seconds. No comparison.

Nice try though. 2nd, for the few Canadians that do come to the States, the vast majority are for elective procedures, not life saving ones. Finally, former NHL players Eric Lindros and Steve Yzerman came to London, ON to the Fowler Sport injury clinic for their knee operations. Both players were playing and living in the States at the time. 45,000 Americans die every year due to poor access.

That is simple not true. I'm not anyone special. I also have heart conditions on my mother's side of the family. I have had to get 2 ekg's in my life. One through my family doc, as I stated, and once through the an emerg department. At emerg, I walked in with chest pain and went straight in with others waiting. Was hooked up right away to EKG machine. This is VERY typical for EKG. No one waits. He can go to any blood lab, like where I went, and get an ekg.

@mrfwest We are taxed more, but the total tax burden is only a few % more than the U.S. and that includes all medical care. You add in your premiums, deductibles and copays, you pay WAY more.

Let me explain his story. He was hunting in southern Manitoba, in a very remote, rural area. No where near a major city or major hospital. He had an epidsode and went to a VERY small, rural clinic/hospital. True, they were not equipped to handle major surgery BECAUSE he was in the middle of NO WHERE. If he was near Winnipeg, he would have been dealt quickly at a great hospital. He chose to drive back into his home State. Means sweet fuck all. And again a dozen Canadians also mean fuck all.

@Messier83 You make a good point, that I have said to others as well. The issue isn't the quality of healthcare in either country. Both countries have great doctors, hospitals, nurses and technology. Its a question of access. Both countries have different limitations of access. We in Canada are working on reducing wait times for elective procedures to a minimum. If the States can just eliminate Insurance company abuses, that would be a huge step.

There are a number of patients that either opt out of the provincial payer system, ie. the Amish, or have not yet qualified for the provincial payer system, ie. New Immigrants. What is not legal is doing what you think is somehow ok, slipping the doc $100 so you can go first, even though you might not be as bad as the guy that is ahead of you. Many can't afford a dentist either.

Williams had his friend (a doctor) in New York recommend a guy that performs more of those heart procedures than anyone. Someone who is a multi-millionaire can afford to see him. The rest of the States can't.

I have been treated, as well as my wife, parents, friends, etc. I also work in a health care related industry. Do you want to know the difference between a Canadian hospital and American one? There isn't one. Oh wait, yes there is. The billing department. Canadians do NOT wait for urgent care, Period. And the very few go to the States for care.

@mrfwest Again, I've compared tax rates to my American counterparts, as well as online. There isn't much of a difference in income tax rates. In fact, many making less than 60 grand pay less in Canada. Not to mention, your top federal tax bracket is 35%, well ours is 29%. We pay more for food strickly because we have far less buying power vs. a country that is 10x our population. Our houses cost more, because we didn't have a housing bubble where we lost tonnes of equity. Not good for you.
