Authority and control are addictive to some people, and they don't have your best interests at heart, they just want to control what you do, it satisfies a psychological need for them. Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey spring to mind here.

  2. Will Lastnameguy Yeah, I'm similar, I often find myself in situations where people will assume I'm in charge and ask me what to do, but that's not what I mean. I'm referring to those people who go out of their way to get power for the sake of it. It's a perverse ego gratification thing.

  4. Stephen Bray Doesn't have to be some powerful figure or celebrity, there are lots of people like this in everyday life. They don't try to control the masses (although I'm sure they would try if they had the opportunity), they just try and exert undue influence on the people around them. I can't speak as to what goes on in Northern Canada as I don't live there, but even if people are as strong and independent as you claim they are, then it's still a good idea to be mindful that people like this do exist. They're generally very good at being subtly manipulative. I'll let the "you people" comment slide for now eh? ;)

  5. Uh huh. Never been to a Trump rally. I'm Australian. And I think you're going a bit hard on the assumptions there. Styx was saying that not judging most people too harshly is generally a good approach. You can never really know someone just by watching stuff on the internet now can you?
