  1. IMO syntax is the least important skill in programming, and your ability to quickly look up and understand documentation is one of the most important skills. (Being good at algorithms helps too) Sure, knowing all the syntax you need makes you faster, but most of the time I can't even remember the syntax of my own functions and objects. Yet if I remember the syntax of the, say, 20 things I use most, then there's no issue. Also, whenever I switch from something like Python to C or the other way around, I'm going to make mistakes in bracketing if statements or (not) ending in a semicolon. The way I see it, anyone trying to argue that this is a necessarily bad thing hasn't got enough experience with current day programming. All of this is to say that even though I agree with many of your points, the focus on syntax seems rather pointless to me.

  2. It's worth noting that if _eq_ is not implemented, then it behaves as "is": In [1]: class Dog: ...: def __init__(self, name): ...: self.name = name ...: In [2]: tim = Dog("tim") In [3]: joe = tim In [4]: joe == tim Out[4]: True

  5. "Multithreading" is a very big word when it comes to plain python. You won't be getting any significant performance gain from doing it. If you want to achieve actual multi-threading in python, the best way I know of is to use Konrad Hinsen's modified Python interpreter together with his Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) module included in his scientific python package: https://bitbucket.org/khinsen/scientificpython The problem is that Python's GIL will protest against any form of parallelisation. I tried to build a package that could deliver a Python based BSP package, but was unable to get the GIL to play nice in any generalised case. Hence, the project is currently on the backburner.
