An empire has to be built on top of something. Plus bringing a gun to a knife fight doesnt necessarily encourage the better armed to hold themselves to the agreement. Technological and Scientific superiority/power disparity and all that.

Australia and New Zealand are both Islands. They can afford a disarmed public.

@Emerald_Forge Canada ? Sure. Mexico ? An economic partner sure. But thats it. Mexico might not be cohesive enough ti be a political threat but it is a host to National Security threats. Only country in the world from where people can walk to the US and more importantly have a reason to do so.

@Emerald_Forge Also the deserts and mountains in the American south would have been an effective barrier. IF we lived in a preindustrial world.
