  3. A first world country whose entire existence has been marked by an existential threat from across the strait. Plus they're an Island.(Islands are always a b**ch to invade eg: UK, Japan, Cuba.) PRC might win eventually but they will have to pay for every inch with blood which I am sure they're willing to spare. A victory even if its a pyrrhic one can do wonders in times of socioecononic upheavals.
