  1. When westerners talk about India its either through rose tinted glasses(nXt sUpuH powah) or outright caustic pessimism. Peter seems to have a much more reasonable perspective on India's prospects that has only gotten optimistic over the years. As an Indian I say he is more or less accurate about his understanding of India's geopol status quo.

  2. Not necessarily. But I'll say given Indian history we have every right to screw with the west atleast with the British in particular. But India as a country is geographocally isolated(relatively speaking from the East and the west. China directly faces the pacific bringing it close to the American Western seaboard. India is confined to the IOR and frankly we have everything we need within the IOR(energy from the arabs + food from Australia & Myanmmar also the E.African side of the Indian ocean holds sum real potential) except a large enough market to sell our wares(US is oceans away so is Europe). Even India's military power is land heavy. India might become a "nuisance"(asserting its interests) to the west maybe at the tail end of this century, Then again which western ally in our neighbourhood would we offend ? Pakistan ? Bangladesh ? Who else is there, thats even remotely relevant ?. If any Indian leader dares to pit India against the west before that timeframe he will be responsibile for the collapse of the Indian state.

Our rivers flow from the Tibetan plateau, desilting them an keeping them open year round is exceedingly hard given that India only recntly started to pay attention to its rivers and started to improve their navigability(most of which were borderline useless for comm. transporation). Plus most of the population clusters are far far away from out industrialized regions.

One of the perks of an authoritarian system is that If the guy at the top is smart, driven/highly motivated, competent and has foresight then its all good(Think Park Chung Hee, Sun Yun Suan, Li Kwoh Ting, Goh Keng Swee, Lee Kuan Yew, Hayato Ikeda, DXP, Mahathir Muhammad, Merkel, Xi Jin Ping). If he is not an authoritarian, is left leaning and an incompetent(at best mediocre) administrator then your country will limp along(Think Nehru, Obama). If he is an outright stup1d m0r0n(Pol Pot, El Jefe, that Ugandan guy) the your country is f**ked.

  11. ​ @woosterjeeves  I am Indian and honestly thats not really racist. Anybody who has traavelled the length and breadth of the country can attest to that. Though the situation with infrastructure is improving incrementally but at a much more subdued pace than that of China's.
