@SimplyVanis challenging in the sense that they don't what US to dictate EU's policies. Essentially EU wants autonamy. Which the Americans are like "hell no" because American tax payers virtually underwrite European defense, Same with S.korea and Japan. In fact American tax payers underwrite the global security system including the security of sea lanes from state piracy. Kind of the reason why we have active world trade in the 21st century despite having the technology to disrupt it. Everybody hates the Americans ironically enough the consequence of not having them around to keep everybody in line is exponentially worse a fractured world with regional fiefdoms controlled by a dominant local power vs what you have now. As they say you don't know the value of sight till you lose it.

@Jeffdachefz cultural influence can go only so far. But then again they were unnecessarily bleeding in Mali. The French have backed their commitments with blood and lead, which makes them relatively reliable allies, Just hope I haven't spoken too soon.

They failed with EEC and later EU. Looks like they are going to take another crack at it. If the Germans hijack this like they did with the Union, Things will start to get interesting in Europe after three decades.
