  3. The Soviet Union was the new global superpower after WWII, not America. The US had already been the foremost superpower before the war even begun. They just added a new weapon to its arsenals and mobilized the population and industrial capacity that already existed.

  14. If the dollar collapsed, that would cause a global great depression and likely another world war. It won't happen in our lifetimes because the entire world uses the dollar as the reserve currency. The ruble has never been a global currency like the dollar.

Japan foolishly started an unwinnable war against a country that was already the largest economy, and had enough natural resources to outproduce any other country. The Japanese treatment of civilians, POWs, and refusal to surrender is what caused the firebombing of Tokyo and use of atomic weapons. The intended action was partially to influence negotiations with Stalin, but there was less sympathy because of Japan's war Crimes.

  23. In present-day geopolitics, the US-UK function essentially as one country with two different capitols. The US is a modern-day version of the British Empire.

I didn't consider you a "simpleton." You just seem to have a strong opinion on US foreign involvement and are refusing facts that aren't in complete agreement with your worldview. You're preoccupied with trying to relitigate old disputes, treaties, and legislation as if will change the situation in Ukraine. You don't have to be pro-Nato or for Zelenskyy, but Ukraine is sovereign. Regardless of your views about America's foreign policy, Ukraine didn't start the war. If you're that afraid of confronting Russia, you can sleep fine at night because Ukraine is the one fighting and winning against Russia. If you want peace and are tired of thousands of young Russians dying for nothing, then go get the Russians leave Ukraine and go home. As long as they remain Ukraine, they're target practice for US-made weapons.

  26. They're on a different continent from North America. Can you think of any reason why China or Russia would be expanding, seizing islands, and trying to surround the US mainland with missiles? They've used border disputes as pretext to invade, but you're assuming they would use the same containment strategy as the US.

  31. I've finally decided that it's time to forgive Britain and the Canadians for this. Although it feels like it was just yesterday, in reality it's been over 207 years. Since we fight on the same side in nearly every international conflict, and we all speak the American language and use American common law legal systems, then we're stronger as united allies than hostile adversaries.

  36. @Joe PenguinPtakk You really think Russia will use nuclear weapons for the first time against another Slavic country that was once part of the Soviet Union. Those Russian general advising Putin have relative and connections to Ukraine. That would be like the United States nuking the United Kingdom because they left NATO and entered a military alliance with China. There would probably be threats, but there's nothing to gain from actually using them and the population of America have close ties with the British. It's like saying, "If I can't have them, no one will."

  39.  @oddieott  If there was a demonstration bomb or nuclear test of what a modern hydrogen bomb looks like compared to atom bombs, there'd probably be a lot less saber rattling about using nuclear weapons in war. Most of the world now haven't seen what a nuclear weapon looks like detonated in the atmosphere, but it's more of a weapon of terror and desperation. The peaceful research of nuclear technology and ICBMs contributed developing new sources of electricity generation and launch vehicles for space exploration, but it's mostly been used as nuclear blackmail and as geopolitical leverage.

The power to make the agreement is from constitutional power given to the president and the underlying treaty on nuclear nonproliferation. Ukraine surrendered their nukes to Russia, and we entitled to security assistance from the US, UK, and Russia. If you don't like, elect a president and Congress that will get rid of it. For now, it's still active and part of US foreign policy.
