In the US, the original intent could have been to develop a separate American identity and promote patriotism, but the myth that George III was an out-of-control tyrannical leader and directly ran government and colonial affairs is still taught in American schools.
With the positive and closer US-UK-Canada relations that improved after the War of 1812, you'd think a more accurate description of events would be encouraged.
On occasion and out of habit, I'll make the mistake of describing pre-1776 America as under tyranny, or claim that the US is the longest continuously functioning liberal democracy with limited government, and our divinely inspired Founding Fathers invented the constitutional right to a fair trial.
After graduating law school, I have much more respect for Magna Carte, English common law, Bill of Rights, judicial independence, and parliamentary supremacy.
Although the empire is not without fault, and there are plenty of former colonies that endured actual tyranny, the British legal system, economic doctrine, and their language have all arguably been the best gifts to the world and sets the gold standard.
