  1. Galileo Galilei and Albert Einstein were both brilliant men, far ahead of their times. Their thought experiments and mathematical models contributed greatly to classical mechanics and relativity. Had Isaac Newton not been in the rankings, either Galileo or Einstein would be considered the greatest theoretical physicist of all time. Newton had a scary level of genius. When he's compared with other scientist, he almost seems unhuman. Over the centuries, as more precise measurements have improved our observational data, Newtonian mechanics and gravity had to be modified to remain valid. Despite the relativistic modifications and the development of quantum physics and modern cosmology, there's still a preference of the Newtonian model of the universe, vector calculus, differential equations, and the classical concept of force.

  4. He would find himself mentioned in more textbooks than any other person, and I couldn't image how awkward it would be for physics or mathematics professor to get Newton's laws of mechanics wrong.
