I don't think the impact of US extraterritorial sanctions and economic-warfare power is fully appreciated by most audiences. The amount of direct trade between the US and Russia, or the fact that Russia has access to an alternative market in China, is completely irrelevant.
The sanctions come in many forms and have the ability to disrupt nearly all of Russia's foreign trade, weapons system deals, and domestic projects requiring international financing. The White House could also damage the ability of the Russian State to sell government debt to raise capital to finance their military and military-industrial complex.
The US and its foreign interests aren't without risk. Russia is able to mount an effective defense and offense against the US, UK, EU, and NATO by using coercive tactics with asymmetrical warfare. They've used cyber and chemical-weapons attacks, disinformation, espionage, designing weapons to evade US missile-defense systems and interfering in elections and political discourse in the West.
They're currently holding Ukraine and other former Soviet Republics hostage by bullying and threatening to use its conventional armed forces and weapons, its massive nuclear weapons arsenal, and its vast natural resources, which are in high demand.
