@sybergato Spend 2% of GDP on defense, including new military purchases from primarily the US and UK contractors. Have the capability of not online defending their own homelands, but come to the military aid of any NATO country that invokes Art. 5. Both Georgia and Ukraine were at the earliest stages of the NATO membership application process.

Ukraine doesn't meet the membership requirements yet. They also don't have control of the country: Crimea has been annexed, and in the Russian-speaking east, Kremlin-backed separatists are still fighting government troops. The US, Russia, and Ukraine have a separate security arrangement that required Ukraine to surrender their Soviet-era nukes back to Russia on the condition that Russia and UK provide military aid.

@victorstalick5528 It's got nothing to do with the US or NATO policing the world. The US, Russia, and Ukraine were all parties to the Budapest Memorandum. It's a legal executive agreement that gave both Russia and the US the obligation to provide Ukraine with arms and funding to secure its borders, use of US/UK/France sanctions powers on Ukraine's behalf, and UN Security Council vote and/or veto.

That would violate the US-Russia security agreement, and it's opposed by the other NATO states. In 1994, the US and Russia got Ukraine to surrender all their Soviet-era nukes and ballistic missile. Russia and the US are supposed to aid Ukraine in defending their borders (Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances). That's why the US is arming the Ukrainian government troops, and Russia is arming rebels who are Russian-speaking and want to be part of Russia.

@JT0007 No direct conflict is almost guaranteed because of the size difference in military spending and the nuclear option, but the Russian don't respect weakness in the White House from any president. It's a game of chess and chicken, so the Kremlin has to believe that we are willing to go to war. At the last minute, either side presents a diplomatic option that's likely to offer little or no change. The Russian troops will move away from the Ukrainian border, and In twelve months, we'll be back to the same situation again.

How close were they from shooting the plane down? They banned the advertising blimps that used to fly over the Super Bowls 21 years ago. It looks like they had parachutes, so I would've used a stinger missiles to look like a bad ass and become the savior of the capitol.
