I'm not downplaying the role European colonialism had played in the fermentation of racial/ethnic tensions and civil war, but this type of barbarianism and violence was unapparelled in history. There are more factors at play, and the role of the Catholic Church and nonintervention from the international community definitely contributed, but it's hard to describe this as anything other than hate and pure evil.
There are cases of wartime genocide, man-made famines, terror, and ethnic cleansing that occurred in Europe, the USSR, Turkey, Middle East, Sudan, and Asia, with higher total death counts, but the Rwandan genocide was much more brutal and involved the indiscriminate butchering and stabbing from regular citizens.
Rather than imprisoning victims in labor camps and using mass murder, starvation, and complications of disease to exterminate a population, the Rwandan genocide took place over weeks. It's unthinkable that now many of the perpetrators and surviving victims share a community and interact with each other. I hope something like this never happens again.
