  4. It's not just the US. NATO did the no-fly zone and coordinated operations in Libya, and left months later. In Syria, CIA armed rebels to fight Russian and Syrian government forces (Not the ISIL rebels). NATO conducts strikes against ISIL. The US marines we're arming Kurds and training Syrian Democratic Forces, but now they're guarding oil fields until they're handed back over to Syria.

With the Monroe Doctrine, annexation of Hawaii and Polynesia Island, colonies in the Philippines, Panama, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, I'm genuinely curious why the US government never openly admitted being an empire. Right now, it would be properly considered a "mega-super-duper global empire," but I guess it wanted to distinguish itself from empires in European, the Middle East, and Asian.

  9.  @Stevethelightingguy  The US and Russia aren't only geopolitical competitors, they also compete for markets for selling weapons systems, and gas. NATO gives US defense contractors and corporations access to the EU to sell American products, and the US LNG industry benefits from new European countries looking for alternative sources of gas. The Soviet Union used to have the Warsaw Pact as buffer states, but they could also sell Soviet-made weapons. I don't see how that would work Russia being in NATO, when their defense industry specializes in developing weapons to counter the American-made ones.

  16. It's true there have been problems with imperialism from the West, but how is it any different from what China is attempting to accomplish? The US has decided to take a different approach by purchasing American-made drugs to treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria and giving them to poor countries in Africa for free. The motive behind the decision is to protect US patent rights, but it has saved millions of lives. Other healthcare investments include the West Africa ebola and malaria epidemics that the US has taken the leadership role of managing. There's also the discovery of natural resources such as oil and precious medals that has led to a modern form of colonialism primarily from the US and Europe. The US also has countless numbers of military bases that it has been allowed to create in Africa; and it is currently engaged in numerous armed conflicts on continent. China is probably the largest investor, but the US isn't too far behind because there are a number of puppet governments in the African Union, which functions as US proxies.

  20.  @haneul1271  I don't want you to misunderstand me. I know that he has very high approval ratings in Russia, and they are legitimate. He's brought stability after Yeltsin, and for younger Russians, he's the only leader they've ever known. If the US installed a puppet to run against Putin in a fair election, I'm not for sure, but I believe Putin would win. It's not because he's lovable and popular; it's because of the image of stability and fear of chaos. Despite that, he is genuinely afraid of a US-backed regime change because the US has a history in interfering in Soviet and Russian power struggles. The CIA wouldn't target him directly. They would go for the Putin-backed politicians and oligarchs who are hated by the Russian people. He has his own United Russia political party, and even selects all the candidates including the fake opposition that runs against United Russia. The problem with any regime change to get rid of him would be if someone much worst replaced him. There could be countless Stalin-like replacements waiting to seize power.

  23. We agree that Russia is a large, beautiful, and diverse country with a rich history and complicated relationship (to say the least) with other foreign powers. The country is safe from an external threat of invasion, so who knows why the Kremlin keeps the country on a heightened level of national security risk.

I'd like to believe that we've provided war reparations (Marshall Plan style) to settle claims related to military interventions, police action/military advisors, and regime changes during the Cold War, War on Terror: Al Qaeda and ISIL, and the sectarian competition between Iran and Saudi Arabia. It would greatly benefit the region, the US, and the European Union if there were a restorations of the US-Iran nuclear deal. The Middle East is very complications, and it's hard to send a small post or comment, when it deserves its on novel just to summarize and provide historical background.

Russia is still the corrupt enemy; or to put it more accurately, Russia is a hostile foreign adversary of the US , its international allies, and America's overseas business interests and it can't be trusted under Putin. If the Kremlin had the diplomatic and economic ability to get support from its allies, then Russia would have a similar status as the former Soviet Union. The US has projected power around the globe as a superpower since 1918. I'm not sure why you'd think the US would walk away from an empire it took centuries to create.

NATO is hostile to Russia and was created to keep US in West Europe; keep Soviets out of West Europe; and keep Germany and UK from remobilizing, and going berserk again. There was North Atlantic Cooperation Council that invited Russia to establish a mission at NATO, but if they offered Russia or the Soviet Union membership that would have made news and could be researched.

China might seem reckless, but they're not crazy, and know what it's like to get defeated on their own lands. They can't even reclaim Taiwan, which was part of China. They're not strong enough. That would like China keeping the US from Hawaii, when they kick the US out of Asia and get the Kremlin to call them before invading Ukraine, then I'll call them a superpower. Right now they're still getting bullied in their own backyard, and trying too hard to be taken seriously. They don't want war, and war is essentially all the US is known for.

  38. We could care less about the Russian people. That's their problem for supporting Putin. The sanctions are to collapse the economy and isolate Russia. They're used as a deterrent before the war, but since it's already in progress, the only purpose is punishment. Putin can fight his stupid war and keep losing thousands of Russian soldiers. Claiming financial sanctions don't work is like saying, "Killer drones don't work because terrorism still exists." He's saying economic sanctions aren't old, but they were the primary reason Japan attacked the US and British Empire after being sanctioned for invading China. It was "good China" back then and not the CCP.

This is Putin's miscalculation. Most of the world can't distinguish a Russian from a Belarusian or Ukrainian, so how is one Slavic country slaughtering a smaller Slavic country an American problem? That would be like American soldiers suddenly appearing in French-speaking Canada to liberate them from the Trudeau government. The Canadians wouldn't take us seriously, and would run us out of their country. It's a dumb move, so constantly blaming America isn't the answer to all the world's problems. This was a decision Putin made, and it only helps NATO. The US wouldn't be able to influence so much of the world if it weren't welcomed. Apparently, there is something the US and EU are doing differently than China and Russia. As JFK said: "The West doesn't have to build walls to keep our people in."

JFK made his point clear during the Cuban Missile Crisis and on live TV, which is not a power Putin can project on the same level. It's the former Soviet Republics that he's bullying. They absolutely could do it, and it was serious enough to scare Putin to believe it was happening in Ukraine in 2014 and in Russia after his questionable 2012 election. The KBG/FSB and the CIA/MI6 have done it for decades. That's the reason Iranians still have "Death to America" chants today.

The US is too big for this dispute and is more concerned with the CCP that resolving a EU-Russia conflict. The US interest is preventing another war in Europe, and proving arms and military aid to Ukraine. If the EU is opposed to a tougher stance on Russia, then so will Russia.

He's just responding to hostile actions, which will bankrupt Russia long before the US or EU. The Russian economy is trash not only from US sanction and oil prices, but also the pandemic lockdowns. The post-pandemic economies will have higher levels of inflation, and if Russia is growing at a similar recovery rate as the EU and US, the ruble will continue to lose value. If you want to know how the economy is bad, is the fact that they're planning a war as a jobs program or to get sanctions relief.

  94. It might not seem as centralized or coordinated as the Kremlin's version of asymmetrical warfare, but Kyiv and its allies are countering Russia outside of the battlefield as well. Primarily under US leadership, the West has been engaged in economic warfare, financial sanctions, cyber-attacks, human intelligence (surveillance operations), and influencing public opinion with war propaganda. Also, Ukraine successfully lobbied for the US and UK to weaponize their other diplomatic and soft powers to weaken the Russian armed forces, economy, and the foreign-held assets of Russian oligarchs and the Russian Central Bank.
