  1. How and why was Admiral Halsey seemingly so popular with the sailors under his command when his main achievement seems to have been to get lots of them killed and lots of their ships sunk through his own recklessness?

  2.  @johnbuchman4854  And that's just the typhoons - if we also count the times Halsey's recklessness needlessly endangered his men and ships in battle, the total goes up to at least four (Santa Cruz, Samar, and the two typhoons).
