@bkjeong4302 Of course, the American 16s could actually hit the ship carrying that belt and deck armor... the Italian 15 not so much. Also, those test conditions, although generally unrealistic, could theoretically happen in actual battle (Yamato and Iowa run across each other at point-blank range in a storm, both sides aim their guns at each other and open fire, and Yamato happens to take a clean hit to a turret faceplate at an instant when she's momentarily rolled 45 degrees towards Iowa by the violent sea conditions).

26:47 - In addition to safety reasons, lyddite (a.k.a. picric acid, plus some other stuff) was sensitive enough that the shock of impact would often detonate the shell before it could actually penetrate, making armor-piercing shells using lyddite, even once they were developed, a tad unreliable at actually piercing armor (although they did still manage to do so often enough to be useful).
