1. Would a glassless rangefinder system relying solely on polished-metal reflector optics (to reduce the fragility of the rangefinder system) be feasible for naval use? 2. Considering just how the Battle of the Saintes went, why did the Marine Nationale keep trying to name things after de Grasse? Career-endingly-catastrophic naval defeats that involve yourself being taken as a POW don't usually qualify an admiral as good namesake material! 3. Could you do a brief history of naval ramming?

@WALTERBROADDUS The reflective surface itself is still made of metal. Astronomical telescopes get to put a glass anti-corrosion coating on top of the metal because they don't have to survive being shot at.

@WALTERBROADDUS Yes, if they decide to concentrate on optimizing their battlefleets for close-quarters combat (thus requiring the maximum imaginable durability of the ships and all of their systems to allow them to bludgeon their way to the enemy fleet).
