@edwarddunne2758 Perhaps because deck-edge elevators make it much harder to close off the hangar from the outside (given the massive opening in the side of the hangar which needs to be open onto the elevator platform when the elevator's lowered), thus allowing things like bouncing/skip/glide bombs, low-angle kamikazes, the weather, heavy seas, etc., into the hangar to wreak havok?
