  1. Why would taking battleship-main-gun caliber up beyond 18 inches produce a large dropoff in rate of fire (as you've said from time to time)? Wouldn't further increases in caliber just require the use of more-powerful motors and actuators in the shell-hoisting-and-loading machinery to keep up a given rate of fire (and potentially upgrading the guns' recoil mechanisms to get them back forwards in the same amount of time even with the heavier recoil of a bigger gun, but this would almost certainly not be the limiting factor for rate of fire)?
