If the USN was concerned about Ranger's vulnerability to attack in WWII, why did they send it to the European theater, when the Atlantic was crawling with many more U-boats than the IJN had in the Pacific and the Germans had things like Fliegerkorps X running around with armor-piercing ordnance with capabilities the Japanese could only dream of (and even more so from mid-1943 onwards as things like the Fritz X began to come into play)?
