The discussion of the 40-knot capital ship reminds me of when I SpringSharped out a 50-knot aircraft carrier; even with no belt armor (...albeit a 3.5-inch-thick armored deck and a 5-inch torpedo bulkhead over the vitals) and no guns larger than a 5"/54 (albeit with 52 of those), it ended up 1,750 feet long (over a quarter of a nautical mile) at the waterline and requiring just over two-and-a-third million shaft horsepower, delivered through an array of 32 propeller shafts (to keep the transmitted power from twisting the propellers off their shafts), with its fuel bunkerage at full capacity alone weighing as much as an entire escalator-clause battleship and a full deep-load displacement of just over 275,000 tons. Speed is hard.

Happy New Year, Drach!

I don't quite get why the RN gave up on letter designations for Agincourt's turrets; A-B, P-Q, W-X-Y, done! (IMO, X-Y-Z for the aft turrets would be better-suited for a design with a superfiring pair and then a turret at deck level aft of that, like the American Delaware or Florida classes; for something like Agincourt, where the superfiring turret is the middle of the three, W-X-Y makes more sense than X-Y-Z.) 1:07:32 - Could that jet-powered S-boat potentially have been simply a suicide weapon packed with explosives, like the jet-and-rocket-powered variants Japan tested (but didn't manage to work the kinks out) of their Shinyo suicide motorboats? 1:07:50 - "capable of 40 knots, so that nothing can get away from it" sad Le Terrible noises
