How much of a technological leap was it going from the last generation of U.S. seagoing monitors (e.g. Puritan and the Amphitrites - BTW, can we get 5-minute guides for both of those?) to the early U.S. coastal predreadnoughts, both first-class (e.g. Texas mk. I and the Indianas) and second-class (e.g. Maine)? And how well does either group of ships stack up compared to the early-to-mid-1890s predreadnoughts of other navies?
