@timesthree5757 Agreed; it was a good weapon, but they didn't bother to beta-test it and initially sent the submarines out with the bug-ridden version. Once people actually started listening to, and acting on, the submariners' bug reports, the Mk. 14 was able to reach its full potential.

Why didn't the Allied naval forces fighting in the Solomons have any heavy-repair facilities closer to hand than Espiritu Santo, even though lessening the sailing distance required of a badly-damaged ship might well've saved a number of ships which historically sank before they could get to a repair station, or any refit-and-modernization stations closer than San Diego (initially) or Pearl (later on), when being able to refit and overhaul in (say) Great Roads or Espiritu or Port Moresby or even Sydney could've allowed ships to get refitted and back into action far sooner?
