  1. Especially given that cannons and such used to be classified as 2-pounders, 6-pounders, 64-pounders, etc., and bore gauge is literally just the reciprocal of this ('cause, for stuff smaller than a 1-pounder, it's less clunky to say, say, "4-bore" than "one-quarter-pounder").
