  1. That's Mercury-Redstone 1, not Mercury-Atlas 1; Mercury-Atlas 1 also failed, but for a different reason (structural failure during ascent, like what happens in KSP if you use an ore tank as a main structural component in a very powerful rocket and forget to throttle down around Max Q).
