Tip for air launches in KSP: you should be able to recover the launch plane if you increase the unload and pack distances in your Physics.cfg file enough that the launch plane never goes on-rails; I have not (yet) specifically tried to recover an air-launch launch plane using this method, but I'm pretty confident it'll work, based on my experience with a hacked Physics.cfg thus far.
