We don't vote for PM's either.

They reflect the different sensibilities of the European population, just left/right is too black and white.

Like what?
4
So unpopular but get elected?
4
Well, Europe is not a country so the joke's on the Americans.
3
Center-left is, unsurprisingly... centrish.
3
You just voted for a brand new EU parliament, what are you on? Also if she were a dictator she wouldn't be struggling to get elected, no?
3
Macron and Scholz were elected the very same way Meloni was... by the people.
3
Representative democracy... rings a bell?
2
I was not even thinking of the UK since I'm not British, but in any case what would you change in the way the EU elect its representatives?
2
Without elections? Funny, I could swear we had elections just a few weeks ago.
2
Don't go by YouTube comments... most people in the EU are quite ambivalent when it comes to her work and many barely knows who she is.
2
@wile123456 I can think of several leaders that are charismatic but terrible. To me charisma is always a secondary trait.
2
Probably because they are too small.
2
@Hardcore_Remixer They appear in lists, if you don't like them just don't vote for that party.
2
Not at all
1
@Abernis Well, we're not talking about the President of the EU, that role doesn't even exist. If each parliamentary group submitted a candidate it's obvious the winner would always come from the EPP or the S&D, which are routinely the two biggest groups. Seeing that's what already happens that would end up being redundant. Also a problem with universal suffrage in the EU is the complete disparity between countries populations... at least the EU parliament tries to minimize that. The biggest countries still have the biggest delegations but without a full parity with their populations. With universal suffrage voters from Germany, France and Italy would dwarf everybody else.
1
@aldogiusti9129 I don't think Italy is a circus but the country on the whole isn't much different from 2 years ago.
1
What would you change?
1
You are about to get disappointed.
1
People have to eat. 😂
1
@jerrymiller9039 People are grouped in parties, you don't need their names on the ballot.
1
Direct democracy in Europe would be a mess. And the largest countries would take virtually all places.
1
What do you suggest? We just voted for a brand new parliament.
1
Her group is too small to have her as president.
1
@davidgreen5994 Great explanation. I wish more people understood how the EU really works. same table.
1
@arfanahmad366 Every organization has to have a leader, no matter the kind of power he or she has so no... of course it's needed.
1
@arfanahmad366 It's not needed, the President reflects the relative strength of the elected groups in the parliament. Any system of direct election for the presidential role would heavily skew towards the candidates from the countries with the largest populations because people tend to vote after nationalities. It's better this way.
1
@MrCarlinios Most of them are otherwise they would sit on The Left group.
1
Nobody in Europe thinks in those terms, you must reading tons of propaganda.
1
A hard sell
1
@thetreelander7378 But is it not working? There hasn't been a power vacuum or anything.
1
We just did?
1
This is just a normal democratic process when you have different sensibilities, I won't affect how the EU is run much. I much prefer this to some group taking the majority of the seats and take full control without having to negotiate anything.
1
What do you expect when you have 27 countries working together, that everyone will easily agree?
1
Because the EU and the US have a ton of completely different sets of policies.
1
@luisfilipe2023 Not always... see Germany and Italy for instance.
1
@luisfilipe2023 True, but I wouldn't say von der Leyen is proper governing anybody. Also, if people directly elected the President of the European Commission, he or she would be German or French everytime give the size of those countries and how people typically vote based on nationality. The only reason Estonia and Malta can have candidates to important roles is precisely because we don't get to vote directly... barely anyone outside those countries know who they are.
1
@MarketsDriveTheWorld But neither the right nor the left will unite... extremes too radical for a majority of centrists. That's why there are so many groups.
1
@jerrymiller9039 Primaries for each party seems like a hassle... as with national elections the parties themselves rank their candidates. You are supposed to be voting more for ideas than for people, and since those candidates belong to the same party it's assume they will share their manifesto. As for high level leaders... I suspect people would vote more based on nationality which can be a problem when you have countries with 80 million people and countries with 5 million.
