They are not unaccounted for, they just didn't enroll for a variety of reasons. That's why media outlets are not talking about it.

With their families, where else?
7
No, each week some of the people in the list will contact the authorities so they will have to remove them. In the opposite direction some people will be able to tell someone they know is missing.
7
The pattern is more or less clear... newer houses/commercial spaces built with more modern materials and security codes were those which resisted the best.

@GoldenPeaches And there's also the fact that the authorities have to try and figure out who was in Lahaina on the day of the fire. While it must be much easier with the locals (and not everyone from Lahaina was in town that day I'm sure), determine how many non-locals, immigrants, off the grid people, etc, were there that day requires quite a bit of diligence. Thanks for sharing your experience regarding real people living through this.
5
There are barely any missing children... do you hear anyone in Lahaina claiming children are missing?
4
@HarleyDavid-j1f They didn't enroll so by default they are "unaccounted" yes. They are not missing though, do you see scores of parents claiming so?
4
@@foreverfree23 Drop the 2000 missing children claim, it's bogus. Nobody in Lahaina is claiming that... it would imply 4000+ parents and family members looking for them and nothing of the kind is happening. Almost all children survived and are next to their families.
4
@annawofford559 If the locals claim that that's easy, they just have to contact the authorities and give the names of those missing... that's what they are asking for people to do.
4
Yes, but people want their loved ones identified.
3
@Soapgirl64 I know... and it's rather unfortunate so many people believe that nonsense.
3
@tabatha-joeyharris81 And what makes you think they haven't done that already? Making a headcount of the locals is the easiest part, those who lost their homes and remained in the area are in hotels and airbnb's so they are listed and checked already. You don't look specifically for children you look for the entire households. A life is a life, nevermind if a child or a senior citizen... and these last ones were even by far those more affected by the fire when you look at the confirmed deaths list.
3
Nothing.
3
I haven't heard of any local claiming 1200 people are missing.
3
@cattuslavandula You're most welcome. It's important that people know how challenging it is to compile the most accurate list possible.
3
No there are not thousands of missing children. Have you seen anyone in Lahaina claiming so? Neither have I.
3
Who would you put fronting this investigation? You have to make a lot of contacts and put tons of bits of information together... who could do it better?
2
Not enrolled, doesn't mean they are missing. The parents and children are mostly in hotel rooms and airbnb's.
2
They don't discriminate based on age... a life is a life.
2
There aren't any buses missing, you just made that up.
2
grandjem6447 There are no 2000 kids missing, just go to Lahaina and talk to the locals. Take your head off conspiracy theories.
1
@sue_downing555 There aren't 2000 non-located children, that would be an absurd number. They are with their families in hotels and airbnb's. Others have left the island to live with relatives and such.

@steverumpli4663 I haven't yet heard that "kids were sent home from school" thing from the locals, only online. What I heard is that school would only start the next day. People in Lahaina are talking about many kids missing? That's easy then, they must call the authorities and say their names so that they can be added to the missing persons list... that's what they are asking people to do. We need accurate facts, not assumptions. And personally speaking no, I don't think many (depends on how you quantify "many") children have died in the fire... looking at the list of confirmed and identified deaths, most of the people who died in the fire were senior citizens, a fact not that surprising considering their reduced mobility.
1
@@foreverfree23 Why would they discriminate in terms of age?
1
@HarleyDavid-j1f Yes, I considered that... that's the whole purpose of the missing persons list though I suspect most names there will be from elderly citizens, judging by the ages of the confirmed deaths. That and off the grid people which is quite common in Hawaii. Many parents decided not to enroll their kids just yet, they are homeschooling them or just getting around the trauma of being homeless. There has been meetings between parents and the local board of education to discuss those matters.
1
@HeatherRose2023 Most parents in Lahaina want their kids to get back to school as they were before. As outsiders we should not butt in.
1
@tabatha-joeyharris81 There's a list of 66 people missing and I don't think there are many or even any children in that list. They are fine with their families.
1
@Andy_Holmes Thousands with nobody to report them? Family members, friends, neighbours, employers? You need to live extremely off the grid for nobody to notice you are missing.
1
@Andy_Holmes And what are the chances of that?
1
That's one of the main hurdles in compiling this list yes... to know of everyone who was in Lahaina the day of the fire, most especially people who are not from the town.
