They didn't know they had just reinvented the practice torpedo. The circling back problem is created by the detonators not working the way they're supposed to. The torpedo can't circle back if it explodes on time. That's what happens when you let your ego get in the way of good engineering practices.

Rather timely, considering what's going on with China and her friends.
3
Then all four Iowa Class would be involved because Halsey decided to skip the carrier fleet. ð He was itching to get in the fight...

Such a waste... oh the humanity!
2
They didn't tell us much about Japan when I learned about this in school. I guess they were pushing a different message at the time.
2
Boats, not Ships! Lol ðĪŠ My own opinion has always been that submarines are only submarines, not boats or ships. They mostly turn horizonally with no banking either in or out of turns, unless they're going really fast, maybe...
2
Interesting lesson for the Japanese points the finger at current western naval doctrine with its lack of well armored batteships. "One punch and he's history!" - Courtesy, Mike Tyson. ðĨ
2
Yeah, they have light composite armor, but we know that doesn't survive very long with multiple hits. Whatch'a gonna do when you run out of interceptor missiles?
2
Degaussing you mean. lol - I am relatively "positive" that is what "The Philadelphia Experiment" really was! â ð

Here's a serious question. I know it will dig up the usual debates, but all I want to know is, truthfully, which of the two superheavyweight battleships would have seen the other first? The debate always seems to come down to that. So, I guess radars and such come into play, along with daytime and nighttime optics.
2
Would you go back in time and replace Spruance with Halsey at Midway if he hadn't gotten that rash?
2
That is thee question of the Battleship Era.
2
Bully! ðĪ You mean the 1800s? Oh, you mean 1900 -1909 ð
2
Two Iowa Class against a single Yamato Class seems a reasonable assumption. This analysis pretty well shows it would be a disaster for both sides... well then, time for the planes to finish the argument.
2
Well, since the Yamato was wider than the Iowa, who had more square feet? ð Going with historical criterion, which ship had more bathrooms? I think a realistic match-up would be two Yamato Class vs four Iowa Class. That's what the two sides had. ðĪ·ââïļ

Why don't we make a new 203mm, 8" naval gun and put it on a new cruiser?
1
Do you have any info on the 18" gun version? I know that wasn't a very practical caliber, but WTH... ð
1
Would also be nice to see what would have happened if they had used the new 16"/56 caliber, or even 16"/58-60 caliber, maybe in 3 triple turrets with a higher, 30-33 knot speed.

What, LCS isn't a good design? I knew that as soon as I heard the name. "Fiasco" written all over it and filled with pride. If they'd had their heads screwed on straight, they'd have called them Corvettes and brough them in with a reasonable price tag. Ditto with the Zumwalt. The size of a heavy cruiser, they could have put rocket assisted 8" guns on there and saved the taxpayers a lot of money! Just paint them all gray, and call it stealth.
1
Well, not to be difficult, but there are a lot more than two types of armor steel in these ships. You might narrow it down by individual production runs, but that's about as lucky as you're going to get with that one.
1
466 lbs of what? that is the question... How about Blackbeard's fleet? The Monitor? Virginia?
1
One of the many 20th Century failures to accept modern technologies.

Where's the USS Constitution video?

Well done.

That's hilarious.

What do you think of the Constellation Class? ðð Just got to build them in time to stop the Nine Dash Line.
1
Thanks! Well done. ð

Someone thought I was a waiter at an inaugural ball. Don't wear a red tuxedo shirt next time.ð

Has anyone calculated the damage from a single hit from a Yamato 18.1"/47 Cal shell on various places on an Iowa Class? I think it's a bit thick to consider all armor on the Yamatos to be 23" when in fact it was only the turret faces. I don't suppose a Superheavy shell from an Iowa would have too much trouble elsewhere on the ship. The maximum for each ship was very similar, and the longest recorded hit was a lot less, from a different, British ship at that.
1
If that happened, Yamato would get a lucky hit in on the Iowa, even though she was targeting New Jersey. ð

What battleships would have been assigned to Taffy 34?
