  2. "How dare you!" Is this a management thing? Most of the forest fires in the U.S. are caused by poor undergrowth management, et al, too much fire suppression contributing to a buildup of tinder.

  3. You don't need existing water in a contained system. You can provide your own liquid and run it through a heat exchanger to heat water, do whatever you want to do with the heat. What took them so long? This is basic technology. It's just about running the tubes down into the ground. Remember, Iceland has volcanoes. That makes it more cost effective.

  5. These technologies all develop in areas where it makes sense. Most of the open air heat pumps that are available in my area only work down to just below 40°F (4°C), so they're not very popular. They just don't save enough money. As these technologies mature, they will be more useful in more areas. The good thing about geothermal is that it is more isolated from atmospheric changes than solar or free air heatpumps. We still need nuclear if we are actually going to reverse climate change. The money has to be there. Fusion byproducts can be used for many things people do not yet realize. Deuterium fusion makes helium, for example.

  6. Energy is heat, so we're warming the planet directly, 3 times as much as we have to compared to what we use. Insulate your house! It's not all about cost savings on your heating bill, as you can now see. Think of the other two thirds that's wasted.

  7. So you block out the sun? No, not by reducing growing surfaces. Covering water could reduce evaporation, to what effect is not certain. You cannot go covering up aquatic biosurfaces without having some detrimental effect on the underlying biology. Aquifers are a definite candidate. Rooftop solar is largely still an unexploited endevour. This should not be used as an excuse for deforestation. That could easily become the consequence of this project. They must clearly procede with caution. It is certainly not a panacea. We have to avoid being deluded by profiteering motives. We have discussed microwaving birds before. 😂 Let's give fusion a chance. By thetime these ideas come to fruition, they may have figured it out. They crossed the main threshold now. Also, there are much improved fission technologies that are much safer than first generation nuclear plants. Meanwhile, EVERYONE should be installing rooftop solar, and wind power where it's practical. If you use the intermittent power sources to fill up reservoirs, you can make hydropower while ensuring that there will be water.

Shutting down is an expensive process, as is reactivating, so there is always a temptation to just build a newer. Right now, better alternatives are becoming available, like Micro and Mini reactors. -300MW and -1GW respectively.

  9. The United States West Coast has lost over 95% if its forest due to timber cutting, poor management and forest fiires. Maybe monoculture is what Billl Gates meant when he said planting trees does not off set carbon. We need to allow forests to repopulate in a more natural way, with assistance, because a natural forest sequesters far more carbon than a monoculture tree farm. So too does organic farming compared to corporate style farming where too many chemicals are used. The soil in these naturally styled habitats retain far more carbon, especially underground, several meters in fact.

  10. I think if any country can contribute to renewable technology, it is Germany. It's very simple to store nuclear: simply pump all the reservoirs full of water, then release the water through generators as needed. They definitely should have keptbthe last three nuclear plants operating instead of opening new coal mines. That was ridiculously embarassing to me, and I'm not even German! I think every country has their scapegoat technologies, but one should never underestime the effects of malevolent foreign influences, especially in Germany from Russia. We in the U.S. suffered major delays in nuclear technology because of KGB interference in our society, especially in the technology sector and politics.

  13. Go Nuclear, and bring back the forests. There are all kinds of new options available. I was going to replace all my gas appliances, but the grid goes down 3 to 5 times a year, including the dead of winter. The auxilliary power plant runs on natural gas, and who knows what the main system is. Aside from price gouging, there's no good reason here to replace it. Solar was taken over by the chinese, so you never know what you're installing, and home windmills are a joke. Lithium batteries explode. Nuclear has advanced a great deal, and it's getting safer all the time. We won't even need to worry about spent fuel soon!

  15. 200 feet of ice water!!! 💦 Too late to stop it now. We forget that ice is its own insulator. If you contain the ice at the poles, you'll end up with two giant swimming pools. We've got to try and reverse warming, and we need to learn to mitigate the results of Climate Change until we can lower temperatures again. This will take centuries not decades.

  16. We should not be taking out vegetation to make room for solar panels. That much is certain. Whatever planting that can be done that is compatible with the shading created by these panels should most assuredly be done. However, we consistently seem to be overlooking all the places where vegetation already doesn't exist. Places like roads and rooftops are yet to be extensively exploited. Some crops are not compatible with shade, but there is no need to eliminate vegetation simply in order to locate solar panels. This offsets the benefits of renewable energy by destroying carbon sequestration.

  19. I'm all in up to 2030, then I'm going to look at the prospects. I'm hoping we get fusion going sometime between 2050 and 2100. Before that we're going to have a hard road displacing fossil fueled electricity. It's all well and good to have EVs, but in the U.S., it's just not practicle yet. Hydrogen powered charging stations could help, but is my car going to blow up because of a lithium time bomb? Green Hydrogen is a fossil fuel. That is more likely to be the last one. We'll be using that in the 22nd century.

We can solve this if we embrace nuclear lower and replant forests instead of continuing to tear them down as we are. There is still a lot to be done that we are not yet doing, but we will.   32. You need pure oxygen for combustion engines too, otherwise you get NOX pollutants. Once we have local smaller reactors that process water into hydrogen and oxygen, transportation won't be as much of an issue. Hydrogen can also be piped instead of methane. Nuclear plants can produce hydrogen during off peak hours, so that actually makes nuclear power plants more efficient.

  37. The main reason all these technologies weren't developed was because we had already started using petroleum, and it was simply the cheapest and easiest tech available. It was really not a few evil people that caused global warming, although they helped, a lot. Reality is Big Oil told Congress about Global Warming a long time ago. Blame Big Government, not Big Oil. Now, it's time to fix it.

  38. No worries - as the human population dies off, the planet will rebound. A lot of the DNA of subspecies will be stored by crossbreeding, such as in the case of Polar Bears crossbreeding with Brown Bears. The natural selection process will yield robust new generations from the survivors.

  40. The biggest problem is most of the population is sociopathic. We just have to stop buying new fossil fueled devices, and then everything will be replaced by electric powered devices within a few generations, with most of it being replaced within a few decades. That's on target to meet most of our climatology needs. The end of this century is going to be a doozy either way, but the real difference will be whether we survive the next one.

  47. If course they will. You still have to find a way to store energy to cover all 24 hours of the day. Wind is not consistant, which is the problem with all renewables. I don't consider nuclear renewable. If you pump lots of desalinated water uphill, you can release it through turbines as needed. It's better than batteries.

  49. What about the person you are getting it from? You buy someone a heatpump and then what? You both get carbon offsets? Sounds like a carbon multiplier, not an offset. Buying someone else a heatpump can be a good thing if it works below freezing, but that's like riding a bike for ten minutes and then eating a dozen donuts. It's just not enough, especially when it's not being used.
