  2. Were these "assurances" made as promises to the USSR, or were they just statements? Does an "assurance" to the U.S.S.R. count as a promise to Russia? No more reason than Putin's own aggression is needed to justify Eastern Bloc Nations joining NATO. He needs to look inward to Russia and himself to find the real answer to his dilemma.

  3. There is that Eastern European alliance of about 9 nations near Russia. Of course the U.S. is currently involved, but that doesn't mean the group couldn't form on its own.
