Better to factor in ones awareness of the ego when one is formulating one's opinions imo. I've met people who think they have abandoned their egos, but are actually more egotistical than ever. The ego is intrinsic to the psyche and more than capable of deceiving its owner. Freud discusses this. Question everything is one of my guiding principles.
