@newshot3191 agnostic isn't an alternative to atheist. You can be both or either. The old guy though he was smarter than he actually is.

@Bearded_Bro no he doesn't. Gnostic refers to knowledge, not belief. Theist means you believe in a diety, therefore atheist means you lack belief in a diety. Gnostic mean you "know" something, agnostic mean you don't claim knowledge. They don't refer to the same thing. An agnostic atheist is one who's not convinced God exist but doesn't claim "knowledge" of that meaning they aren't making a positive statement that "God doesn't exist". Understand?

@neptica9926 you're definitions are right enough, it's just that last bit that's off. You can be both atheist and agnostic. Since they refer to different things (belief and knowledge), you can use the both to clarify your position. I'm not convinced God exists based on the evidence I've been presented therefore I don't belive in God. That makes me atheist by definition. I do not claim to know for certain God doesn't exist though. If I saw convincing evidence I could change my mind. That makes me agnostic.

@armandoc.3150 Nope, that's not the definition. Theism means belief in a diety. Atheism is lack of said belief. Agnostic refers to knowledge, not belief. Agnostic means you don't claim absolute knowledge. For example, a gnostic atheist would be someone who not only doesn't believe but also claims to know there's no God. An agnostic atheist would be someone who doesn't believe but doesn't claim to know everything, therefore they're open to the possibility is the evidence presents itself.

@armandoc.3150 I think you're just misunderstanding semantics. Agnostic doesn't mean "I think there might be something". It just means I don't know everything so I might be wrong. Atheist is not saying"there is no god", it just means we aren't convinced. By that same token, agnostic doesn't mean "I belive in magic", it just means I can't say with absolute certainty that magic doesn't exist. You can think whatever you want but the general usage of the two words is just as I described. If you think you caught an atheist in a gotcha moment, you didn't. It's just a misinterpretation of the word.

@armandoc.3150 At this point I'm not even sure what you're trying to say but that's cool. Agree to disagree I guess lol

@armandoc.3150 Saying you're open to the possibility doesn't not at all mean you, by default, believe in the supernatural. I don't belive in anything supernatural. I just accept that I don't know everything. Personally speaking I'm very much an atheist in the sense that I don't see how a higher power even could exist but to claim it as a certainty would be a bit much. I have to claim agnostic just because I'm not omniscient. That doesn't mean I accept ghosts or magic or any other such thing.
