"I would want to suggest that the animals at that time were before reptiles and mammals diverged" - they never diverged; reptiles and mammals both had ancestors that diverged (basal amniotes) into separate lineages; one produced reptiles, the other mammals "avians are direct descendants of that time and are are still living and thriving among us" - this is ambiguous, but seems to follow on from referring to the period before 'reptiles and mammals diverged'. You seem to be saying then that birds descended from a time before 'reptiles and mammals diverged', which is wrong
